Many of you asked us during the free open days of the Micro Frite Museum in Brussels (every first weekend of the month): but where has the Friture de la Chapelle gone?

The Friture de la Chapelle in 1000 Brussels, at the foot of the Notre-Dame de la Chapelle church, is quite a symbol. Its fries, whose aroma perfumes the surroundings all the way to the Sablon chocolatiers, form the link between the Marolles and the tourist centre of the Belgian capital. The Friture de la Chapelle is also one of the few that recall the sacred link that unites places of worship with chip stalls or fritkots. In the past, how many churches have not welcomed, right against their sides, all over Belgium, baths of boiling fat in which sticks of bintjes potatoes are immersed? Do you remember, for example, the fritkot on Place Saint-Josse, originally attached to the church?

Friture de la Chapelle, the new «mirror fritkot» in Brussels?

But what happened to the fritkot or Friture de la Chapelle? (photo: Google Maps, April 2023)? Yes, that is the question! The answer is simple: just like the Tabora friture at Porte d'Anvers or Chez Jef in Neder-Over-Heembeek, it is getting the desired facelift in the Brussels Region to identify the fritkots in the public space. If everything goes as planned, the Friture de la Chapelle will become a "mirror chip shop", as many already call these fritkots redesigned by an architect's office.

Frites Museum Brussels: memories of the historic Friture de la Chapelle

At the Micro Frietmuseum in Brussels by Home Frit' Home, the authentic and historic Friture de la Chapelle will remain on display forever. In two dimensions through a drawing by Mado Berthet, and in three dimensions, thanks to the talent of Yorick Efira who, in 2017, dedicated one of his high reliefs made from recycled materials to it (our main photo). Yorick Efira is back at Home Frit' Home, until January 5, 2025, with his new exhibition "Agglomérat". Opening on Friday, October 4 (6:00 p.m.-9:30 p.m.), rue des Alliés 242, 1190.
