After "BE Lowbrow" in 2018, Alfred Michel Fabry returns to the Home Frit' Home gallery with recent works that observe our everyday life with an eye that is at once tender, funny and a touch biting.

Trained at the contemporary art workshop of Marthe Wéry (Institut Saint-Luc) and at the Académie de Saint-Gilles, Alfred Michel Fabry lived through the era of conceptual art and American formalism before choosing to diversify his practices: drawing, engraving, painting, installation, comic strips, and even photo-novels. This technical diversity comes with real intellectual rigour: for each medium, the artist starts from what he considers a historical high point (German expressionism for engraving, the Nabis group for colour, etc.) to offer a resolutely contemporary reading of it. His images, fed by B-movies, science fiction, punk rock and his own city, Brussels, work like small scenes of life where the ordinary cracks open, where laughter meets unease, and where the familiar takes on a surreal tinge.

1. «Tentatives de titiller le nerf optique» The artist unveils his oil paintings on canvas for the very first time! Alfred Michel Fabry plays with the way we see: an ordinary scene hides another one, a dream slips into reality, a single detail can flip the whole image.
"Just as thought is not univocal, but rather unfolds in a branching way, vision too works in a sequential and multiform manner." - Alfred Michel Fabry.
Colours, shapes and compositions unsettle the gaze, as if the optic nerve had just been given a gentle nudge.
2. «On ne choisit pas sa famille» A series of pencil drawings that tackle - with humour - a subject we all know well: family. Portraits, small scenes, comical or slightly biting situations… you may well come across characters whose existence in your own family you never quite suspected!

Home Frit' Home is the Micro Belgian Fries Museum Brussels, an unusual guesthouse and a Belgian-Belgian gallery that loves to talk about our everyday life through art. Between old documents, objects and creations, stories about fries, and the works of Alfred Michel Fabry, you are invited to dive into a very Belgian world, warm and quirky.
